Many people seeking to take a dive trip in Asia over look the Philippines as a destination mostly because it’s not marketed enough in comparison to other Asian countries. The fact is that the Philippines is one of the best places in Asia to SCUBA dive, there are over 7,000 islands with white sandy beach and innumerable amount of coral reefs and caves to dive, making this nation a SCUBA diving dream location.
I have been living in the southern part of the Philippines for over 11 years and have loved the natural beauty, the people and the diving. Getting around here is easy, there are plenty boats and planes to access every island if so desired. The only hindrance is that there aren’t as many dive companies renting equipment as they have in more developed countries, this is actual good news because most of the best dive spots have not been dived by many.
Coron Island: Coron is a municipality of the Palawan province, Coron Bay has a great wreck dive. The oil tanker Taiei Maru belonged to the Imperial Japanese Navy during the occupation of the Philippines, it’s more than 160 meters long and is lying level on the sea floor. The wreck is full of corals and abundant fish life.
Malapascua island: Monad Shoal has Thresher sharks that are 6 metre long, this is one of the few places on earth you can see them.
Apo Reef: The Apo Reef ranks as the second largest coral reef in the world, it’s a natural park and sanctuary and is made up of three islands. Apo Reef atoll serves as a spawning ground for many coastal and marine species, fish and marine mammals thrive here.
